Bio-PET and PEF are the two plant-derived resins available today for cosmetic bottles. Bio-PET is chemically identical to fossil PET and recyclable in the PET stream; about 30 percent of the carbon comes from sugarcane ethanol. PEF is a new furanoate resin, 100 percent plant-based, with up to 10 times the oxygen barrier of PET. Bio-PET is a drop-in; PEF is a frontier material. Both cost more than fossil PET and both have a place.
Bio-based does not mean biodegradable. Bio-PET and PEF are plant-derived but not compostable. They sit in the same recycling stream as fossil PET, and they break down the same way at end of life. The win is upstream: the carbon in the resin started in a sugarcane field instead of an oil well, which lowers the cradle-to-gate footprint by 20 to 60 percent depending on the resin and the supply chain. The trade is cost. Bio-PET carries a 20 to 50 percent price premium over fossil PET. PEF is a frontier resin and currently carries a 3 to 5 times premium. Spec the resin to the brand claim you can defend, not to the marketing slogan.
Bio-based resins at a glance
- Bio-PET: Up to 30 percent plant carbon (from sugarcane ethanol MEG), chemically identical to fossil PET, recyclable in the #1 stream. Drop-in replacement. Price premium 20 to 50 percent over fossil PET.
- PEF: Polyethylenefuranoate, 100 percent plant-based (Avantium flagship). 10x oxygen barrier of PET, 2x CO2 barrier, higher Tg. Frontier resin; commercial supply limited to pilot and early commercial volumes.
- Mass balance: Fossil-19 / Bio-PET is typically certified via mass balance (ISCC PLUS or RSB). The bottle carries a verified bio-based carbon percentage even though the molecules are mixed in the plant.
- Recyclability: Both bio-PET and PEF are technically recyclable in PET streams (bio-PET) or in dedicated PEF streams (PEF). PEF contamination of PET streams is the open question for 2026 to 2030.
- ShiJin: 1,000+ open molds in PET, HDPE and PETG; MOQ 5,000 units. We offer bio-PET drop-in on selected SKUs with ISCC PLUS mass balance certification. PEF on pilot volumes.
What Bio-PET Is and Is Not
Bio-PET is the same molecule as fossil PET. The difference is where the carbon comes from. In fossil PET, the paraxylene (PX) and monoethylene glycol (MEG) both come from oil or natural gas. In bio-PET, the MEG comes from sugarcane ethanol in Brazil, and the PX still comes from fossil feedstock. The result is a resin that is 20 to 30 percent plant carbon by weight, depending on the supply chain.
The chemical identity is what makes bio-PET a drop-in. A mold that runs fossil PET runs bio-PET at the same cycle, same temperature profile and same wall thickness. The bottle looks identical, the cap fits the same neck finish, and the recycling stream is the same #1 PET stream. A consumer cannot tell the difference. A lab cannot tell the difference. The only way to tell is the mass balance certificate.
Bio-PET is not biodegradable. It is not a replacement for PLA or PHA, which are compostable but not recyclable in the PET stream. If the brand claim is 'recyclable in the PET stream', bio-PET qualifies. If the brand claim is 'compostable', bio-PET does not. Our biodegradable resin guide covers the compostable side.
What PEF Adds Over Bio-PET
PEF (polyethylenefuranoate) is a different polymer. Avantium developed PEF as a 100 percent plant-based replacement for PET. The monoethylene glycol comes from sugarcane and the furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) comes from plant sugars. The polymer chain is different, which is why PEF has different properties.
The headline gain is barrier. PEF has up to 10 times the oxygen barrier of PET, 2 times the carbon dioxide barrier, and a higher glass transition temperature (Tg around 86 deg C versus PET around 70 to 80 deg C). For a cosmetic that oxidizes or loses fragrance, the barrier improvement can extend shelf life or let the brand drop a barrier layer in the pack.
The headline challenge is supply. PEF is in early commercial volumes. Avantium built the first commercial PEF plant in 2024 and 2025, and the resin is still priced at a 3 to 5 times premium over fossil PET. Pilot volumes are available for sampling and small launches; broad commercial supply is expected through 2026 to 2028. Our barrier properties guide sets the comparison frame.
Mass Balance Certification
A bio-PET bottle does not carry a literal '30 percent plant' stamp on the wall. The bio-based carbon is verified by a mass balance certificate, the same system used for sustainable aviation fuel and for bio-PET in the beverage industry. The producer tracks the plant feedstock through the plant, mixes it with fossil feedstock, and certifies the bio-based carbon percentage by mass balance.
The two main schemes are ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) and RSB (Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials). Both certify the chain of custody from the sugarcane field to the resin. A buyer who asks for a bio-PET bottle should also ask for the ISCC PLUS or RSB certificate with the shipment. The certificate is the proof behind the claim.
Mass balance is the industry standard for now. Critics argue it lets producers claim bio-based content without physical segregation. Defenders argue it is the only way to scale bio-PET in the existing petrochemical supply chain. The PET bottle carries the verified percentage. Our PCR vs virgin guide shows the same logic for recycled content.
Barrier Performance
PET is a reasonable barrier for most cosmetics but not the best. It lets oxygen and carbon dioxide through at measurable rates, which is why a vitamin C serum in PET needs an antioxidant or a barrier liner. Bio-PET has the same barrier as fossil PET; the molecules are the same.
PEF has a measurably better barrier. Independent studies put PEF oxygen transmission at 0.7 to 1.0 cc mm / m2 day atm at standard conditions, versus 6 to 12 for PET, depending on grade. CO2 is 2 to 4 cc mm / m2 day atm for PEF versus 25 to 50 for PET. For an essential oil, a vitamin C derivative or a fragrance, the higher barrier extends the shelf life and can let the brand drop the oxygen scavenger.
Barrier is also why PEF is interesting for refillable and returnable bottles. A refillable bottle sits with product or residual product for days or weeks; lower oxygen ingress means longer in-bottle stability. PEF is still a frontier resin, but the barrier data is the reason buyers track it. Our barrier guide and refill pouch guide cover the broader barrier and refill frame.
Recyclability and the PET Stream
Bio-PET is chemically PET. It melts at the same temperature, flows at the same rate, and crystallizes the same way. In the #1 PET recycling stream it is indistinguishable from fossil PET. A recycler cannot separate a bio-PET bottle from a fossil PET bottle, and there is no need to. The recycled output is the same.
PEF is not PET. The polymer chain is different. PEF contamination in a PET recycling stream is an open question. Industry groups like the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) and Petcore Europe are running tests in 2025 and 2026 to define the PEF tolerance in the PET stream. Current guidance treats PEF as recyclable only in dedicated streams.
A brand that wants a recyclable cosmetic bottle today should spec bio-PET. A brand that wants the best barrier and accepts a smaller recycling stream should spec PEF and prepare the dedicated collection. Our resin ID guide and EPR guide cover the broader recyclability and producer responsibility frame.
How to Specify Bio-Based on the PO
A bio-PET purchase order has to specify: the bio-based carbon percentage by mass balance (typically 20 to 30 percent), the certification scheme (ISCC PLUS or RSB), the certificate to be shipped with the lot, the resin grade and supplier, and the food-contact or cosmetic-contact compliance statement. The unit price carries the resin premium; the PO carries the certificate.
A PEF purchase order needs the same plus a pilot-volume statement. PEF is in early commercial supply. Order in pilot quantities (typically 5,000 to 50,000 units), expect longer lead times (45 to 90 days), and confirm the certificate and the dedicated recycling stream with the resin supplier before the PO. The brand claim '100 percent plant-based' must be backed by the certificate.
At ShiJin we mold PET, HDPE and PETG from our 1,000+ open mold library with MOQ from 5,000 units and 15-25 day lead times. For bio-PET drop-in we offer ISCC PLUS mass balance certification on selected SKUs and ship the certificate with the lot. For PEF we run pilot volumes and support the brand claim with the resin supplier certificate. Send us the resin and the brand claim, and we will quote the bottle and the certification to match.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between bio-PET and PEF?
Bio-PET is chemically identical to fossil PET with 20 to 30 percent plant carbon from sugarcane ethanol. PEF is a different polymer, 100 percent plant-based, with up to 10 times the oxygen barrier of PET. Bio-PET is a drop-in; PEF is a frontier resin.
Is bio-PET biodegradable?
No. Bio-PET is chemically PET and is not biodegradable. It is recyclable in the same #1 PET stream as fossil PET. For biodegradable or compostable packaging, PLA or PHA is the right choice.
What is mass balance certification?
Mass balance tracks plant feedstock through the production plant and certifies the bio-based carbon percentage. ISCC PLUS and RSB are the main schemes. The certificate is the proof behind the bio-based claim.
Is PEF recyclable?
PEF is recyclable in principle, but the PET stream contamination tolerance is still being tested in 2025 and 2026. APR and Petcore Europe are running the tests. Today, treat PEF as recyclable only in dedicated streams.
How much more expensive is bio-PET than fossil PET?
Bio-PET carries a 20 to 50 percent price premium over fossil PET. PEF carries a 3 to 5 times premium. The premium reflects the smaller plant-feedstock supply chain and, for PEF, the early commercial status.
