Vacuum metalizing is the practical route to a metallic cosmetic bottle. It vaporises aluminium under vacuum onto PET, HDPE or PETG, then seals it with a clear topcoat. Electroplating plates a thick metal skin, but only on ABS, PC or PMMA, never on the polyolefin and polyester bottles used for cosmetics. Pick the finish by resin, not by look.

Two processes put metal on a bottle. Electroplating grows a real metal layer by electrolysis. Vacuum metalizing deposits a thin aluminium film in a vacuum chamber. They look similar in the showroom and behave very differently on the production floor, in the recycle bin, and on the purchase order. Metallic finishes at a glance

  • Electroplating: Electrolytic plating of copper, nickel then chrome. Works on conductive plastics only: ABS, PC, PMMA. Not usable on PET, HDPE or PETG without a conductive base coat.
  • Vacuum metalizing: Aluminium vaporised in vacuum, condensed as a mirror film, then sealed with a clear lacquer topcoat. Works on PET, HDPE and PETG after surface pretreatment.
  • Film thickness: Electroplating builds microns of metal; vacuum metalizing lays 0.05-0.2 micron of aluminium under a 5-15 micron topcoat. The bottle stays light.
  • Recyclability: Metallized PET and PETG are rejected by standard PET streams unless the metal is stripped. Electroplated ABS is even harder to recycle. Both hurt mono-material claims.
  • Cost driver: Vacuum metalizing scales well at volume and suits most bottles; electroplating costs more and limits resin choice, so it is rare on cosmetic bottles.

How Electroplating and Vacuum Metalizing Work

Electroplating starts with a plastic that can be made conductive. The part is etched, dipped in electroless copper, then plated with nickel and chrome in a bath. The result is a thick, true metal skin that feels cold and reads as solid chrome. The catch is the base: only ABS, PC and PMMA take the process well.

Vacuum metalizing skips the bath. The bottle goes into a chamber pumped near vacuum. Aluminium wire is heated until it vaporises and condenses as a mirror film on the wall of the bottle. A clear lacquer is then sprayed over the aluminium to protect it and to tune the gloss.

The two processes share a goal and little else. Electroplating builds metal by chemistry; vacuum metalizing deposits it by physics. That difference decides which bottle you can finish, and what the finish costs to recycle. Our surface decoration guide maps all the finish options side by side.

Which Resins Each Finish Accepts

Electroplating needs a conductive, plateable substrate. ABS is the workhorse; PC and PMMA also plate. PET, HDPE and PETG do not, because polyesters and polyolefins resist the etch and the metal will not bond. You would need a conductive base coat, which adds cost and fails on thin bottle walls.

Vacuum metalizing is far more flexible. PET and PETG take aluminium readily after a light pretreatment. HDPE is a polyolefin with low surface energy, so it needs flame or plasma treatment first, but it metalizes cleanly once treated. That makes vacuum metalizing the default for cosmetic bottles.

Look, Weight and Feel Compared

Electroplating gives the deepest, hardest chrome. The thick metal layer reflects like a faucet and feels heavy in the hand. It suits a luxury object, not a 30-gram bottle, and it is almost never seen on cosmetic skincare packaging for that reason.

Vacuum metalizing gives a bright mirror or a soft satin, set by the topcoat gloss. The aluminium film is grams-light, so the bottle keeps its normal weight and the line fills it without rebalancing. The look is premium without the mass.

For most brands the question is not chrome versus mirror, but which resin the bottle is. If it is PET, HDPE or PETG, vacuum metalizing is the only production route. Durability and Topcoat

An unprotected aluminium film scratches and tarnishes on contact with air and skin oil. The topcoat is what makes the finish last. A 5 to 15 micron clear lacquer, cured by UV, protects the metal and sets the gloss and the rub resistance.

Specify rub and chemical resistance on the purchase order. A good metallized bottle passes 50 to 100 cycles of a standard rub test with no bare aluminium showing, and resists the alcohol and surfactant it meets in a bathroom. Without the right topcoat, the metal blooms within weeks.

Electroplated chrome is harder by nature, but it chips at sharp edges and the plating line can corrode if the nickel layer is thin. Recyclability and Compliance

Metallic finishes fight recyclability. A metallized PET or PETG bottle carries a non-PET layer that standard PET recyclers must float off and reject. The bottle is no longer mono-material, and most curbside streams will downgrade it.

Electroplated ABS is worse. The metal skin and the plating chemistry make it unfit for standard plastic recycling, and some legacy chrome processes carry hexavalent chrome restrictions under REACH. Vacuum metalizing uses no hexavalent chrome, which is the cleaner process by regulation.

How to Specify a Metallic Finish on a PO

State the resin first, because it decides the process. For a PETG 200ml serum bottle with a mirror finish, the line might read: 'PETG, 200ml, 24/410, vacuum metalize aluminium, UV topcoat gloss 90 plus, rub resistance 50 cycles min, no hexavalent chrome'.

Then set the acceptance test. Require a uniform mirror with no bare spots, no edge burn, and no tarnish after the rub and chemical checks. Hold a colour and gloss standard from a signed master, because metal finishes shift with topcoat thickness.
