What Are the Parts of a Dropper?

Every dropper closure is an assembly of four components, and each one can fail independently.

Sourcing the bottle and the dropper from one supplier avoids the classic tolerance mismatch, where two components each sit within spec but do not seal together.

Glass or Plastic Pipette?

Glass reads as premium and is chemically inert, which suits acid serums and oil blends. It also breaks, and a broken pipette in a shipment is a customer-service incident.

Plastic pipettes, usually PP or PETG, survive drops and cost less. They suit e-commerce, travel formats and anything shipped long distance. The trade-off is a slightly less luxurious feel and lower resistance to aggressive solvents.

Which Bulb Material Should You Choose?

The bulb decides both the feel and the chemical safety of the dose.

Nitrile rubber

The default choice. Good elasticity and good resistance to most cosmetic oils. It can discolour slightly over time with strongly pigmented formulas.

Silicone

Softer feel, excellent temperature tolerance and very low reactivity. Preferred for essential-oil blends and premium positioning. It costs more.

TPE

The economical option for water-based serums. Adequate for simple formulas, but check compatibility before using with high oil or alcohol content.

How Do You Get Consistent Dosage?

Dose volume is a function of bulb displacement and formula viscosity, not of bulb size alone. A thin toner-like serum fills the pipette quickly; a viscous oil serum needs a wider bore.

Three specifications control the result:

  1. Bulb displacement. Larger bulbs draw more, but an over-large bulb overshoots the pipette and pulls formula into the bulb itself.
  2. Bore diameter. A wider bore suits viscosity above roughly 3,000 cP. A narrow bore gives finer control on watery formulas.
  3. Pipette length. Specify 2 to 4 mm clearance from the base. Too long and it hits bottom; too short and the last 10 percent is unreachable.
Send your supplier the viscosity in cP. Without it, pipette bore is guesswork and dose consistency suffers.

Why Do Droppers Leak in Transit?

Leaks rarely come from the pipette. They come from pressure change and from the liner.

Air freight is the usual culprit. Cabin pressure drops, air in the headspace expands, and formula is forced past the gasket. Three measures prevent it:

Run a simple validation before shipping: invert filled samples for 48 hours, then hold a set under reduced pressure to simulate air freight. Any weeping means the liner or torque is wrong.
